For most people, this should be a fairly short read. All anyone should really have to say about going to a dead man’s Facebook profile and waging war on the political posts found there is, “DON’T FREAKING DO IT!”
Please, go carry on with your day and keep fighting for causes of virtue, like equal rights, healthcare, gun law reform, minimum wage increases, police reform, etc. Go on you liberal badass, and thank you.
However, if you find yourself tempted to post on the Facebook profile of a person who lost their life in a mass shooting, please stick around and read this.
A little background information. It should come as no surprise that some people attending a country music festival are conservative and in turn, some of the mass shooting victims who died were conservatives, and even . . . Trump supporters. And yes, one victim had even been vocal on Facebook, prior to his death, about his own political views. Those old posts are now being responded to by liberals who wander onto the page to learn more about those who lost their lives in this horrific event.
Look, I realize there is irony in seeing right-wing memes on the Facebook page of a victim of a mass shooting. I’ll just call those posts right-wing memes. You know what I’m talking about. I don’t have to expound on this further because it doesn’t matter. In fact, I think most of us upon finding out such information couldn’t help but think of that irony.
But, that’s where it should stop. Going further than that is a dance in the realm of hypocrisy and cruelty that, quite honestly, borders on an extremism that we should want absolutely no part in.
Isn’t that the root of the division in our country? The fringes continually tug on us, riling up our emotions to the point that logic and rational thinking are secondary. And, you might as well forget any chance for empathy and compassion when this happens – those end up so quashed that the very thing that makes humanity, humane, is gone.
Why are you liberal?
Well, if you’re like me, which I suspect you are, you CARE. You care deeply about your fellow-man. You care about humanity. Sure, you have cynical moments where you look at the world saying, “WTF?!?!?!?” and those moments may occur multiple times a day as of late – but, you care.
You believe with every ounce of your being that all people are created equal, that everyone has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You’re sick and tired of being sick and tired of seeing the underprivileged get beat down. You see our society devolving into a hate-filled place with accepted racism, attacks on human rights, wild-west style gun laws and oppressive norms that just won’t fade away.
The compassionate decency which drives you to fight for the rights of ALL must not be transformed into unfettered anger. If that happens, we end up being no different from the far-right who mocked the death of Heather Heyer. Don’t let the hate in the world do that to you. And, there is no greater impotent rage than seeking out a victim’s profile on Facebook and leaving disparaging remarks for his grieving family to read. It results in nothing but more pain to people who are currently walking in their darkest of days.
Our fight against the right-wing is a fight for all of humanity, including those who have sided, for now, with them. I know that’s difficult to see through the religiously fogged lenses of political glasses, but we must.
We are better than that. You are better than that. Don’t do it.
Writer’s note: The name of the victim receiving the messages has been intentionally left out of this article. Surely we can recognize why it wouldn’t be a good idea to direct more people to the profile. This is not fake news. This is actually happening. If you are intent on seeing it, you are welcome to go look up victims names and search for them on Facebook. These messages are not difficult to locate. I refuse to be a further source of pain for these families. There is a much larger point to this article.
