Another day, another Trump Administration appointee: The head of the Center for Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships, which assists the Department of Homeland Security, once said that Blacks were responsible for turning cities into “slums” and that the only contribution Islam ever made to society was “oil and dead bodies.”
In other news, I’m shocked to learn that Islam existed in the Carboniferous era. That’s a lot of plants who converted to Allah.
Reverend Jamie Johnson made the comments in a series of radio appearances from 2008 to 2016, according to CNN. Johnson was appointed to the Center for Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships by John Kelly in April. The purpose of this “center” to help the DHS “engage a broader cross-section of faith and community-based organizations in all stages of the disaster sequence and provide resources for faith and community leaders to help them prepare for emergency situations” as well as help the DHS fight human trafficking and, apparently, promote bigoted asshats to the top of the ladder.
But then, White Evangelical Christian and racist go hand in hand with one another. Consider the following statement, made in 2008, in which he attempts to paint Black people as Antisemitic and jealous of the success of Jewish people:
I think one of the reasons why is because Jewish people from their coming to America in great waves in the early part of the 1800’s immediately rolled up their sleeves and began to work so hard and applied themselves to education and other means of improvement and other means of climbing the, I hate this phrase, but the social ladder if you will,” Johnson said. “And they have done exceptionally well for themselves. For only representing about 1.4% of America’s population, they make up 12% of America’s millionaires. Why? Because they work. And it’s an indictment of America’s black community that has turned America’s major cities into slums because of laziness, drug use and sexual promiscuity.
I mean, let’s just overlook the fact that the War on Drugs disproportionately targets minorities and that once tagged with a federal offense, your chances of getting a good job are shot regardless how well you improve yourself. Clearly, hard work is all you need to become a millionaire.
As an aside, if you want to shut this line of reasoning down, ask the other person why they’re so lazy they aren’t a millionaire or billionaire themselves.
And this isn’t all. Of Islam, Johnson said, “I agree with (conservative political commentator) Dinesh D’Souza, your friend and mine, who says all that Islam has ever given us is oil and dead bodies over the last millennia and a half,” calling it an “ideology posing as a religion.”
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This guy is a poster child for how not to engage in interfaith dialogue.
Keep in mind, his job is the director of a community outreach center, which means he’s expected to reach across the borders and boundaries of faith to help others.
Sounds to me like he was the perfectly wrong candidate for the job, but that shouldn’t be a surprise given that nominating the absolutely wrong candidate for a job is something the Trump administration has down to a science.
