A brewing company in Gainesville, Florida has decided to take a stand against Neo-Nazi Richard Spencer’s upcoming speech at the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus. A post by Tall Paul’s Brew House on Facebook October 12, who shared the post on behalf of Alligator Brewing Company–a nano brewery located within Tall Paul’s– stated:
Here at Alligator we believe free speech is a cornerstone of our great nation. That said, speech that condones, let alone promotes racial supremacy has no home in America, and it sure as hell doesn’t have a home here in our beautiful town. [W]e unfortunately can’t stop [Spencer] from bringing his hate to Gainesville, but we can empty the room so his disgusting message goes unheard.
Alligator Brewing Company’s plan was simple: Request a free ticket to Spencer’s speech, then redeem it at the brewery for a free pint of beer. The brewery will then destroy the ticket, leaving an empty seat at the event:

As of Wednesday, the post had 2100 likes, had been shared on Facebook 4400 times and was re-tweeted on Twitter over 18,000 times. The post was so popular, in fact, that it caused Richard Spencer to change the way he planned on distributing tickets. Rather than two free tickets to anyone who requests them, Spencer’s representatives will now handpick people to receive tickets in hopes of filling all of the seats.
Meanwhile, at Tall Paul’s Brew House, the hashtag #lesshatemorebeer is trending and they have changed their Facebook cover photo to a picture of a heart with “Love is Stronger” printed in the middle in advance of today’s speech.
Our thoughts are with you, residents of Gainesville. We certainly hope that love is stronger today.
