GOP Lawmaker Submits Bill Declaring Porn A Public Health Risk

Out of all the pressing problems facing Americans today, one GOP lawmaker is convinced that porn is the public health risk we should all be losing sleep over. Seriously.

Riverview Republican Representative Ross Spano originally wanted to declare porn a bonafide public health crisis, but eventually settled for declaring porn to be only a risk to public health. (Insert eye roll here.)

“Basically what the resolution says is that the state of Florida recognizes this issue as a public health risk, not a crisis, a public health risk, and acknowledges the need for education, prevention, research, and policy changes to protect the citizens of this state,” Spano said.

“Research has found a correlation with pornography use, mental and physical illnesses, difficulty forming and maintaining intimate relationships, unhealthy brain development and cognitive function and deviant, problematic or dangerous sexual behavior,” Spano added. “Recent research has also found that one can develop compulsive disorder.”

Spano explained that kids have access to new technology and are able to view pornography at younger ages. He then spilled the beans on his own son’s private viewing habits to make his point.

“And I don’t think anyone can deny the fact that tech has changed at such a rapid pace and our response to that issue has really not been commensurate,” Spano said. “I asked my child, ‘Well when did you first?’ He said, ‘I was probably ten’. And I said, ‘Well how did you..?’ And he said, ‘An older kid showed me. An older kid in the neighborhood.’”

Not surprisingly, Republicans are all about backing Spano’s absurd anti-porn bill. But apparently, not everyone in Florida is bat-sh*t crazy. Sebring Republican Representative Cary Pigman said that the bill is ridiculous and pointed out that there are much more concerning health issues facing Floridians today.

“I am a practicing physician. We have problems with hypertension, with obesity, with diabetes, with Zika. We have a whole list of things that are important medically,” Pigman said after the vote. “I’m not sure that we need to spend legislative time enunciating a particular complaint when we have others that are far more pressing.”

Pigman noted that research on the negative effects of pornography hasn’t produced any clear results. However, a few things are crystal clear.

“STDs are increasing,” he said. “We have HIV transmission which stepped up a bit. We have Zika.”

Pigman’s advice is that lawmakers should leave issues of public health in the hands of the medical professionals at the Department of Health. Spano is likely pushing the bill as a stunt to bolster his bid for attorney general. The bill has one more hurdle to clear before it reaches the House floor.
