John Oliver And Dustin Hoffman Go At It Over Sexual Assault Allegations Against The Actor

Things got extremely heated at the 20th-anniversary screening commemorating the film Wag The Dog on Monday night when panel host John Oliver confronted actor Dustin Hoffman with sexual allegations against him. According to Steve Zeitchik of The Washington Post, Oliver asked about Anna Graham Hunter’s account that Hoffman made inappropriate comments and groped her during the filming of the 1986 TV movie “Death Of A Salesman.” Oliver reportedly said,”This is something we’re going to have to talk about because … it’s hanging in the air.” Hoffman responded angrily:

It’s hanging in the air? From a few things you’ve read you’ve made an incredible assumption about me,” he said, adding, “You’ve made the case better than anyone else can. ‘I’m guilty.’

WaPo’s Zeitchik described the confrontation as “all hell breaking loose” in a series of live tweets about the argument:

Oliver, not interested in taking any shit from a man who has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman, took Hoffman to task for his craptastic apology to his accuser:

John Oliver is the perfect example of what we need in this country: men who will stand up for women when they say they have been assaulted. Far too many men sit back and just let us bleed. It isn’t enough that we speak out, we need allies. If you are a man and you are reading this take heed of John Oliver’s actions on Monday. I promise you, your life is filled with women who have been sexually harassed and/or assaulted, we are everywhere and we need you to stand up and fight for us if we want to see a shift in our rape culture. It isn’t enough that you show us sympathy on the internet, you need to stand next to us (figuratively and literally) and call it out just like Oliver did.

Bravo, John. Bravo.
