It’s been over 150 years since the slavers and traitors of the Confederacy got their asses kicked by the United States and the South is still super pissed off about it. So much so that they haven’t stopped trying to rewrite history to make themselves the hero of the story. In their version of history, blacks were happy in the Confederacy and fought against the Union.
To commemorate this alternate history, two Republicans in South Carolina have put forth a bill to build a monument to these brave and heroic black Confederate soldiers:
A bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Bill Chumley of Woodruff and Rep. Mike Burns of Taylors would create a commission to establish a monument to honor black Confederate veterans.
“In all my years of research, I can say I have seen no documentation of black South Carolina soldiers fighting for the Confederacy. In fact, when secession came, the state turned down free (blacks) who wanted to volunteer because they didn’t want armed persons of color,” said Edgar, who spent 32 years as director of the University of South Carolina’s Institute for Southern Studies and is author of “South Carolina: A History.”
Any African-American who served in a Confederate unit in South Carolina was either a slave or an unpaid laborer working against his will, Edgar said.
Shocker. But Chumley is undeterred!
Chumley said his bill could honor any African-American who served in the Confederacy, whether they picked up a gun or not.
“We are all learning a lot. The purpose of the bill is education,” said Chumley, who filed a companion proposal to research the contributions of black people to the Confederacy in South Carolina and include teach about their service in public schools.
Unless this monument and the lesson plans stress how blacks were forced against their will to help the Confederacy keep them in chains, the intent here is obvious: Whitewash history.
I know it’s a comforting lie to believe that the mean ol’ North picked on the innocent South but the reality is that the South went to war against the United States explicitly to preserve slavery. People like Chumley and Burns can spend the next 150 years trying to rewrite history but it will never work. The Confederacy was a nation built by slavers and traitors. They got their asses kicked by the United States and rightfully so. Fuck them and fuck neo-Confederate supporters like the two morons building a fake monument to men who never existed.
