On Wednesday in Dearborn, Michigan, two toddlers were shot at their daycare. The culprit was actually another toddler. That’s right — a small child was playing with a loaded gun found in a bedroom and accidentally shot the two three-year-olds. Both children were rushed to a Detroit children’s hospital in critical, but stable condition. Multiple children and at least one adult were inside the home at the time. The other children at the daycare were transported to the police station to be picked up by their parents.
As of Thursday, both children were still in the hospital, and one of them remains in critical condition. That child was shot in the face.
Dearborn police have not said what kind of firearm was used in the shooting or how the child accessed it. At the very least, the daycare does not seem to be very child-friendly. How does a toddler get a loaded gun and play with it without any adults knowing what was happening? A neighbor said that she had complained about the daycare before, but nothing was ever done.
According to the neighbor, Carol Rittenbarry,
I’ve seen them out in the backyard playing in their diapers. There’s five or six kids at the time out there, maybe more. A lot of times it’s just the other kid, her older children watching them.
Police Chief Ronald Haddad referred to the daycare as “a babysitting home for a bunch of kids.” No one has officially stated if the facility was even licensed as a daycare. As the investigation continues, police are still determining charges, if any are filed. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the county’s prosecutor’s office.
When asked about the child being able to access a loaded gun, Chief Haddad said,
I’m not going to be judgemental at this time.
Please allow us. There is absolutely no reason in HELL that a loaded gun should have ever been left in a child-accessible location – especially in a home that serves as daycare to multiple children. Someone needs to be charged with a crime – negligence and endangerment, at the very least. And may the babysitter never make another dime from babysitting – ever. That old “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” adage is bullshit. There are two children fighting for their lives who say otherwise.
