Kelda Roys is a Democrat who is running for Wisconsin’s Governor. In a recent family-centric ad, she was interrupted by a hungry infant. Ironically, the ad was about her work trying to ban toxic chemicals in baby bottles and sippy cups. She did what nursing mothers do: fed her baby. She decided to leave the nursing clip in her ad, and some critics are not amused.
Overall, Roys has said that reactions to her unorthodox ad have been positive. However, some people can never be satisfied. Some of the same people who scream about pro-life issues are now poo-pooing her for doing what a healthy mother does.
These are some of the comments she received on Facebook after her ad aired:
“Stay home with your baby and stay out of politics.”
“Sick (expletive) exploiting her baby.”
She did have the opportunity to leave the clip out of the ad, but decided to keep it. She stated,
When the clip came back and it had the nursing in it, I said, ‘You know, let’s keep it in there. Why not?’ People are ready for candidates they can relate to.
As for the negative comments, she said she is used to that sort of rhetoric.
You know what’s funny? As a woman who has been in public life – I was the head of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and I was in the Assembly – I’m used to that kind of really disgusting, sexist language.
We like her already and hope she stays in politics even if she doesn’t win the race for Governor.
