Six-year-old Mohammad was born with severe Down’s Syndrome. He can’t speak, has learning disabilities, and requires round the clock care.
Last month, Mohammad’s class at C.J. Harris Elementary school had a substitute teacher. At some point during the day, the teacher reportedly called police, claiming Mohammad kept saying “Allah” and “Boom” and that she suspected him of plotting terrorism. According to Maher Sulieman, Mohammad’s Dad:
She claimed he was a terrorist. This is so stupid, it’s discrimination. Actually, it’s not implied discrimination, it’s actual discrimination.
Here is where the story gets really disturbing: rather than calling the teacher out on her obvious prejudice and paranoia, police in Pearland, Texas took her allegations seriously. They conducted a full investigation into Mohammad and his family and had them investigated by Child Protective Services as well. Said Mr. Maher:
The last three to four weeks have been the hardest of my life. My wife and kids were crying a few days ago and I told them everything is fine.
The school district has refused to comment, but police in Pearland did disclose that they conducted an investigation and found ‘no need for police involvement’ at this time. The
investigation harassment of the family by CPS is still ongoing. Quanell X, a local community activist, stated:
In my opinion, based on everything I heard from the police department and speaking with the administration from the school, that this was a story piece milled together by a substitute teacher alleging this child was sexually harassing her, the teacher, and possibly being a terrorist. A 6-year-old kid.
Is this where we’re at as a country? A white guy in Las Vegas manages to purchase dozens of automatic weapons over the course of a few months–eventually using them to murder 58 people– and no one bats an eye, but a teacher in Texas claims that a six-year-old with Down’s Syndrome said ‘Allah’ and ‘boom’ and we call out the SWAT team? We ought to be ashamed of ourselves.
